Chestnut Hill Senior Living Celebrates National Nurses Week

Category: Health & Wellness

Author: Melissa Watson,

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. These permanent dates enhance planning and position National Nurses Week as an established recognition event. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. And as of 2003, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week (May 6-12) each year. The nursing profession has been supported and promoted by the American Nurses Association (ANA) since 1896.

Rebecca Smith is covering for us while we are without a Director of Wellness, and she is on top of it! Whenever we reach out to her for questions, she replies quicker than we are used to. Rebecca is very friendly, knowledgeable, and always has a solution or suggestion for issues that we are struggling to fix.

Families would say that getting a quick response to their loved one’s clinical needs is the most important thing to them. Residents would say our wellness team is friendly, kind, and attentive to their needs. We have loyal nurses that have been with us over two years, one over eight years. They truly care about the residents and their well-being. This is not just a job for them.

The wellness team stepped up to support the community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

During COVID-19 all our nurses worked both as nurses and care partners, at times doing both during their shifts. I think the pandemic forced everyone to become a team player and enhanced that quality to those that were already team players.

I want to give an extra shoutout to Leesa Franklin for being our Interim Director of Wellness and Brittany Greenlee, our newest nurse. She is killing it! We hadn’t hired a nurse since November 2020, and we haven’t used many agency nurses to fill our schedules. Our nurses really stepped up and displayed what it means to be a caring and loyal nurse.

We will recognize our nurses at Chestnut Hill Senior Living Columbus, OH during National Nurses Week with a week of festivities. Starting with recognition on the 6th, gifts on the 7th and 8th, and fun dress up days on the 9th, 10th, and 11th. The 12th will be our pinning ceremony for all staff and resident nurses. Formal invitations are being sent out to staff, residents, and their families. We have a student nurse nearing graduation that is coming to pin the nurses for us. LaRon is preparing a nice buffet spread for the event and Danielle Legron is making a slideshow of our nurses to play in the background.

Retired nurse resident Sydney Cook’s advice for the next generation of nurses, “Never lose your passion for caring for others.”
