At Chestnut Hill Senior Living, we are always excited to celebrate the Back-to-School season! Partnering with local schools is typically a year-long effort, but there is a special focus on the time when most students are heading back to the classroom- whether in person or virtually. We have partnered with Columbus High Schools. Our residents find it easy to relate to school outreach efforts as many of them can recall a time when they returned to school as well.
Fostering these relationships helps build a sense of community among students, teachers, residents, and staff. There are plenty of advantages to intergenerational activities- such as decreasing the social and economic isolation so many seniors feel. Research has shown that seniors’ health, memory, and balance can benefit from volunteering regularly with children. Not only do these relationships benefit the older generations, but also the younger ones as well. Studies have also shown that children who interact with elders are less likely than others to start illegal drug use, will more likely have improved communication with their parents, and are less likely to experience depression. Lastly, these experiences can create timeless memories for both the seniors and children involved, such as making a new friend, trying a new game or activity, or listening to stories of each other’s life.
Chestnut Hill is thrilled to form a partnership with Columbus Public Schools, especially the local Columbus High Schools. We are excited to bring intergenerational engagement to our residents! Our initial plan to bring this vision to life involves kicking off the school year with our Chestnut Hill residents welcoming students back on their first day of school. Residents will be at the school to greet the students to offer words of encouragement as they begin their new school year.
It is so important to show support to our local schools with all that is going on in society. Residents can be a huge source of support to students. Elders have so much to share- experience, encouragement, and words of wisdom! They can leave a lasting, positive impact that students can carry with them throughout their life.
There are so many benefits of having residents of senior living communities form relationships with local high schools. The benefit of learning from someone who has lived a successful life can be immensely beneficial to students. Having a guiding voice as they navigate towards adulthood can help guide them down the right path in life. Another benefit of the relationships with local high schools is students would be exposed to senior living. This could provide them with insight into a possible future career.
Chestnut Hill Senior Living will continue to show their support in a lot of different ways this Back-to-School season and throughout the school year.
