Mental Health Awareness Month was originally celebrated in 1949. That was 73 years ago! The goals of the sponsoring organization, originally the National Committee for Mental Hygiene (now Mental Health America), were to improve attitudes toward mental health/illness, improve services for mental health clients, and promote mental health.
Older adults are typically more at risk for depression due to absence of family members or contact with other supports. Older adults also lose some of their ability to be independent, which limits social outings with others. Decline in vision and hearing can also contribute to depressive symptoms.
Potential signs of mental health distress in seniors can include withdrawal, cognitive decline, poor appetite, and disturbance in sleep to name a few symptoms. It is important to attend to mental health just like you would physical health as your mental health and physical health are tied closely together.
